How lessons are offered
Lessons are offered in groups of up to 7 pupils in a lesson, or individually (one-to-one). Group lessons are more effective and affordable, and are recommended, especially for beginners. You can request an individual lesson if you wish, but this is at a much higher cost. Individual lessons are appropriate in certain circumstances, such as the instrument being learned and the standard of the pupil.
We deliver a miniumum of 30 lesson per academic year, averaging 10 per term. Group lessons are arranged as follows:
2 pupils - 20 minutes. 3 or 4 pupils - 30 minutes. 5 - 7 pupils - 45 minutes
Lessons are offered in school subject to the agreement of each schools' headteacher. We do not offer lessons in individuals' homes.
Why use Slough Music Service teachers
Slough Music Service is provided by Slough borough education and children's services, and funded by central government. This means we are subject to rigorous service and safety standards, receive funding to help keep lesson fees as low as possible, and are accountable to government for the quality of our services.
Our teachers are all qualified musicians and have been recruited by musicians and teachers under the 'safer recruitment' guidelines which is now a national regulation for all local authority teachers. All our staff are subject to regular enhanced Criminal Records Bureau checks, are monitored under our quality assurance procedures and receive regular training to update and enhance their skills. Our processes and standards are monitored and checked annually by central government. In cases of disagreement, we have a rigorous complaints procedure, which is overseen and moderated by Beechwood School and Slough Borough Council.
Instrument hire
You will need an instrument to learn, so that you can have lessons and take the instrument home to practice between lessons. Most pupils (especially for the first year of learning) hire an instrument from us, rather than buy their own. We are able to loan instruments to pupils at a reasonable cost (free for low income families). We encourage pupils to buy their own instrument after a few terms of learning; please ask us for advice before buying an instrument. We do not offer hire for all instruments - please contact us to see if we have the instrument you require available for hire.
Charges and Help for Low Income Families
We make a small charge for lessons, and can offer help for families on low incomes.
If the pupil is eligible to receive Free School Meals, or your combined household income is less than £25,000, click HERE for information about schemes to help with the cost of lessons, music centre membership and instrument hire.
*Subsidised/free lessons are normally only available for group lessons. It may be possible to receive reduced cost individual lessons in certain circumstances; individual cases should be raised with the music service who will assess each case. Please note that subsidised instrument hire is only available when the pupil is having regular (weekly) lessons through Slough Music Service (tuition or music centres).
Children in Care (Looked after Children)
We do not charge lesson fees for children who are in local authority care
