Information on past projects

Some of these programmes come under the Sounding Out umbrella, which is Slough Music Service's outreach programme of special projects which target groups in our community that can benefit exceptionally from intervention through music. These groups are chosen as a result of consultations with community support groups, areas of need highlighted by the Slough Children and Young People's Plan, the Department for Education funding aspirations and others who are actively involved in our community and work with us to provide enhancement opportunities for our children and young people. Sounding Out programmes are indicated below with the Sounding Out logo.

All our projects are linked with our Young Leaders programme, giving young people a role in leading music in our community and the experiences and support which are necessary to make this successful. See the Young Leaders section for more details and how to get involved.

Our current strands are (click the title bar for more details where available):

Seeds and Songs - community cohesion and English language support
Now in its second year
Seeds and Songs began in 2010 as a partnership programme, funded by Sing Up, between The Oval House Theatre London, The Sage Gateshead and Slough Music Service.

Funding from Sing Up has now finished, but the project continues in Slough as we have a great need to support the many families who have recently arrived in the UK, and for those whom English is an additional language.

The focus of this strand is integration and cohesion through musical theatre. We use a lot of role play and singing (using Makaton sign language) to address the issues of cohesion and communication.

Sing In - partnering mainstream and non-mainstream schools
September to October 2011
A 1:1 buddying programme partnering mainstream and non-mainstream pupils in primary and secondary phases. Led by Addington School, Wokingham and Arbour Vale School in Slough, the project will partner singing buddies for four weeks of singing, culminating in a performance on October 16th

Looked After Children - activities for those who are in local authority care
Starting August 2011
Consultation phase - please click here if you are a carer or child/young person in care, and wish to complete the online questionnaire

Launching in August and September 2011, we aim to bring opportunities for those who are living away from home and in the care of the local authority. A partnership project between Slough Music Service, SWIPE, The Foyer and Slough Borough Council

Chalvey Cohesion Project - community relations through music in Chalvey
Starting Autumn 2011
A partnership project between Youth Music, Slough Music Service, Barbican/Guidhall Education, Aik Saath, Slough YMCA and Slough Borough Council.

Share the Music - Mainstream / Non-Mainstream school partnerships
January to July 2011
Slough Music Service and Creative Junction have teamed up to offer a programme of music activities for children and young people in Slough to learn music and share their learning with others. The programme is working with mainstream and non-mainstream schools.

Music7 - 100's of year 7 students across the borough working with Creative Learning from Guildhall/Barbican education
March 2011 to March 2012
Slough's year 7 pupils are coming together with Creative Learning from Guildhall/Barbican Education in a project to explore music, creativity, leadership and performance. The aim is to develop creative leadership with students and teachers, which will bring about a new way of approaching music teaching in our schools
