Slough's year 7 pupils are coming together with Creative Learning from Guildhall/Barbican Education in a project to explore music, creativity, leadership and performance in a programme of creative music making funded by Slough Schools to engage all year 7 pupils in Slough through music.
The theme is 51' zero: Where are you? Here am I; a project exploring a group's sense of place and self in relation to the world and people around us.
51' zero refers to the longitude and latitude of Slough. In this project we will use music to express ideas about our environment, our relationships, and the pathways that connect us to the people around us. Leaders are visiting each school, leading workshops with one year 7 class, who write, develop and perform music and songs based around their own interpretation of the 51o zero theme.
Herschel Grammar, St Joseph's and Wexham Schools were the first cohort to take part. Their sessions took place during March 2011, culminating in a sharing on 4th April 2011. See the individual school articles for their story, lyrics to the songs, and video of the performances.
The rest of the schools took part in the summer term. To ensure the legacy of the programme, school music leaders will take the style of learning into the other year 7 classes in the schools, supported and mentored by Creative Learning workshop leaders. This will ensure that all pupils in all year groups will benefit from this inspiring, inclusive and stimulating way of making music.
